My name is Barry Gu, and I founded Youth Voices in Criminal Justice

This is the product of my passion and compulsion to take a step into the world of criminal justice. Criminal justice is a topic that often peeks its head in curricula, news, and debate — but unless it's about the arrest of a former US president, it rarely shows its full form, at least to youth audiences.

Fortunately for me, a series of reasonably interesting criminal justice debates, a reading or two about moral punishment theory, and a particularly interesting news story of the Bard Prison Initiative debating team beating out Harvard, and I was locked in.

I've been around the world debating at the highest levels, sometimes for the Canadian national teams, sometimes being lucky enough to secure victories. This project is taking the discussions I've had of those abused in the justice system and translating it into something real.

ALL ABOUT US

Youth Voices in Criminal Justice is an independent publication launched in May 2023 by Barry Gu. We are a nonprofit charitable publication dedicated to encouraging the creation, improvement and dissemination of criminal justice content, and providing the youth with access to a platform by which to participate in the wider dialogue of criminal justice.

By opening a platform through which youth authors can think and get involved in the world of criminal justice, our vision is to inspire a new generation of forward thinking, change-oriented, ambitious people in the world of criminal justice.

Our writers are accomplished debaters representing the country, national FBLA champions in leadership, and members of the national economics team. We offer think pieces and commentary on broad sections of criminal justice. Thank you for being here with us!
